How To Insulate Your Loft

Loft insulation is something you can do yourself if you want to reduce the amount of money you’re paying to heat your home. A third of your heating costs can be escaping through your attic. Most loft insulation materials function by stopping the movement of warm air within the insulation. The government say that by insulating your attic you cut your heating bill up to 20%.

Loft insulation comes in many different varieties, such as wood and vinyl. All of these materials offer different benefits and pros as well. If you’re thinking about having a new attic installed, it’s important to do a bit of research first. The better quality materials are going to last longer and cost you less in the long run, as well.

Wood attic insulation works best in cold climates. Vinyl is another good option, but you should only choose this type here if you have no other options. This is because they can’t take a lot of abuse from the elements. If you do choose a material that has a vinyl backing, be sure to seal all seams with a caulk or epoxy. You need to make sure there are no leaks because this is the only way to keep them working right.

It’s important that the proper installation is done when you put in a loft insulation kit. When you put in wood, this is usually done with nails and tape. If the tape breaks, the wood will move around a lot and can damage any hardwood or vinyl material that is in there.

The final step in installing your insulation is putting the insulation in place. This is a very easy step. All you do is install the insulation along the bottom of the attic ceiling, then put in the boards and then the rafters. Be sure to leave enough space so that the top of your loft is completely open.

Doing some of the work on your own when it comes to attic insulation is a great option if you don’t feel like you have enough time to do it yourself. It’s not necessary to hire a professional contractor, but there are some steps you should take before and after.

Make sure that there is no moisture in the attic insulation. Then you need to remove all of the wood from the rafters and walls. Once this is complete, you need to put some kind of weather stripping on the bottom of the wall and ceiling. Read more here about these products.
